Superman 2025 : A Bold Reboot Launches the New DCU
Superman premiered at TCL Chinese Theatre on July 7, 2025, and opened widely on July 11, 2025, in formats including IMAX, RealD 3D, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX, and 4DX. Written and directed by James Gunn, with Peter Safran producing, the film kicks off Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of the newly rebooted DC Universe (DCU)
Get ready, because the Man of Steel is making his grand return to the big screen this Friday, marking his first solo adventure in over a decade. With the recent upheavals at Warner Bros. and DC Studios, casual moviegoers might find themselves puzzled about why this new DC Universe feels so different from the ones presented in films like "Black Adam," "The Flash," and "Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom." The straightforward answer? Director James Gunn is fully rebooting the DC Universe, kicking things off with a fresh take on Superman/Clark Kent, played by David Corenswet, in the upcoming film "Superman."
The 2025 release focuses on Superman's struggle against tech mogul Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, his relationship with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lois Lane, played by Rachel Brosnahan, and his broader role in the DC Universe. This film promises a lighter tone, diverging from Zack Snyder's darker interpretation of the character, previously embodied by Henry Cavill in "Man of Steel," "Batman v Superman," and "Justice League."
According to Gunn, by the time this film takes place, Superman has already been a hero for three years, and metahumans—individuals with superpowers—have been around for 300 years. Interestingly, the events of "Superman" occur after the animated series "Creature Commandos," which debuted on HBO Max in 2024. In that series, Frank Grillo voices Rick Flag Sr., the head of Task Force M, and he will be reprising that role in a live-action capacity for "Superman." Furthermore, the movie takes place before the second season of "Peacemaker," setting the stage for appearances from Green Lantern, played by Nathan Fillion, and Hawkgirl, portrayed by Isabela Merced, in forthcoming TV series following their roles in "Superman."
This 2025 film is set to broaden the DC Universe, featuring characters like Lex Luthor, Mr. Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan). Exciting times ahead for superhero fans!
